The scenario was nearly the same as of 2004 when Jose Mourinho visited Old Trafford with Porto. But this time, he was not lucky enough to run down the touch line but to see just stand there and see his Inter side get knocked out of the competition. Two quick goals from Manchester United in each half was enough to see off the threat of Inter. Both teams had good chances but it was Manchester United who made better use of them and luck was also on there side.
United had Vidic back in there lineup and Berbatov partnered Rooney up front. They got off to a great start as Vidic headed them in front early on after some poor defending from Inter. United then began to dominate proceedings and had a couple of half chances but they started to get sloppy as the game progressed. Ibrahimovic had a great chance for Inter but his free header from six yards clips the post and went out. United were giving ball ball in midfield and Inter started to gain some confidence soon after. Dejan Stankovic hit a brilliant volley that seemed to be heading in but Van Der Sar got a fingertip to it. United had the chance to wrap up to proceedings soon after as O Shea had the great chance from 10 yards but Ceasar made a great save to deny him. Stankovic had another great chance from a Ibrahimovic cross but his half volley was wide. Mario Baloteeli who was causing a lot of problems for O Shea sent a beautiful ball for Ibahimovic but he shot wide. At the end of the first half, Man Utd were leading by 1 – 0 but looking at the way Inter were playing, they needed a second goal to calm there nerves.
United got there second goal soon as the second half started when a beautiful cross from Rooney allowed Ronaldo to head in to score his first champions league goal of the campaign. Mourinho brought on Adriano and he nearly scored but his left foot volley hit the inside of the post and rebounded to safety. Berbatov had another easy chance but his shot was saved by Caesar. Wayne Rooney then tested Ceasar with a couple of long range efforts as United began to set there foot on the match. It was then routing business as Manchester United held on to defeat Inter.
Though Manchester United were no upto the mark, they took there chances which came there way unlike Inter. One player that was guilty of missing a few good chances was Ibrahimovic. Though Mourinho had lavished a lot of praise on him, he looked like an average player on the pitch. United on the other hand, showed that they are able to grind out the result in spite of poor performance. Now they have to prepare for the crunch game against Liverpool this saturday.
