Manchester United Defeat Newcastle United 2 – 1 in a Thrilling Encounter

Manchester United restored there top of the table lead to 7 points after a hard fought win over Newcastle United. Edwin Van Der Sar finally conceded a goal after 1,311 minutes when he spilled Gutierrez’s shot only for Lovenkrands to slot home and give Newcastle a surprising lead. But the lead didn’t last long as Wayne Rooney produced a brilliant first touch and fired in the equalizer from 20 yards. It was the turn of Newcastle to make a mistake, and Steven Taylor tried to chest back the ball back to Steve Harper only for Ji Sung Park to steal it and slide it to Berbatov to slot home the winner.

Manchester United made 7 changes to the team that started the Carling Cup final with Van Der Sar back in goal and Rooney partnering Berbatov up front. Newcastle started the game in the fine fashion with Gutierrez and Martins causing problems for the visitors and attacking on the break. Van Der Sar has been highly praised for his recent performances in which he has not conceded a goal since November but he was at fault which led to Newcastle taking an early lead on 9 minutes. Gutierrez shot from the left but Van Der Sar could palm it out to Lovenkrands to slot home a simple opener. Manchester United responded well with Rooney testing Steve Harper but Newcastle again attacked on the break with Martins shooting just wide.

Martins was a constant danger and Vidic got a yellow card for stopping his run into the area. Manchester United soon drew level. O Shea and Park exchange some passes with O Shea passing to Wayne Rooney who a shot on the turn right past Harper after a superb first touch. The game was quickly moving from one end to another as both teams showed there attacking intent and it was after a long time that a team was really causing problems for Man Utd defenders. Vidic could have put United ahead from a corner but he headed wide with the goal at his mercy. Steven Taylor then got a yellow card for cuffing Ronaldo before the half time.

The second half resumed and it was time for Newcastle to make an error. Ryan Taylor tried a chested back pass to Harper but the ball was stolen by Park who passed it to Berbatov for a simple tap in. United then again attacked on the break with Rooney and Ronaldo combining well to pass the ball Berbatov whose powerful shot from 25 yards was tipped over by Harper. Rooney then had another chance but he curled his shot over the bar.

Newcastle showed there fighting spirits and Lovenkrands and Martins tested Van Der Sar with long range shots and this time he was up to the mark and Manchester United held on for a hard victory. It was not an impressive performance by Manchester United but they showed that they can still grind out the results they want even if they are not at there best. Newcastle United should be pleased with there display as this was the only team which has caused Man Utd problems after a long time. If they play like they did today against other teams, they will avoid the relegation.
