Tottenham beat Chelsea in League Cup

Spurs-Celebrating Tottenham beat Chelsea 2- 1 in extra time to win the League Cup, there first silverware since 1999. They have won the league cup four times now and the record of manager Juande Ramos having not lost in a cup final continues. He is sure to become a fan favorite now for winning a silverware in his first season I charge of the club. Tottenham have definitely improved under him and they showed it on the pitch.

They showed great character to come from behind and win the game in extra time against a full strength Chelsea side. There was a lot of talk about Lampard and Terry not starting but they both started in the Chelsea team. Spurs could have gone two up quickly but Chimbonda headed against the bar from a corner and then Berbatov headed wide from Keane’s cross. Chelsea won a free kick when Zokora fouled Drogba and the ivory coast hitman curled the free kick in the bottom left corner of the goal with Paul Robinson completely rooted to the wrong position. Chelsea defended well with there one goal lead but Spurs got there breakthrough in the middle of the second half when they won a penalty because of a hand ball by Bridge. Berbatov calmly converted the penalty and after that Spurs became the dominating force. Zokora had a great chance to give Spurs the lead when he raced through only to see his shot hit Cech on the head and he hit the rebound wide.

woodgate scoring Berbatov also tested Cech with a fierce shot before the end of normal time. Spurs got there goal which they truly deserved in the fourth minute of extra time. Peter Cech punched a Jenas free kick into Woodgate’s head and the ball rolled into an empty head. Though the goal may appear a bit comical, but it is what Spurs deserved. Chelsea attacked after that but the Spurs defense masterminded by King and Woodgate held on and denied Chelsea back to back League Cup wins.

In the end it was the determination and optimism of Spurs player that helped them win the league cup. Spurs were more determined in the last few minutes and displayed belief that they actually could win the League Cup. Almost from the beginning, they were the team driving forward. In the battle between Ramos Vs Grant , it was Ramos who clearly came on top as he got his tactics spot on. Chelsea and there manger were complaining a lot about the referee decisions but they need to get over that and accept that Spurs were the better side throughout the match. Grant said

We led 1-0 and then until the second half there were no chances for either side. We had dominated more in the game and then came the decision about the penalty

But I cant say that Chelsea really dominated. In the end it was the hard work of Spurs players that really paid off. Even Robinson, who was guilty of the first goal played well to keep Joe Cole at bay in the dying minutes. Spurs have certainly improved a lot under Ramos and this might be a start for greater things. League Cup may be considered as a lesser trophy but winning it by defeating Chelsea is surely an achievement in itself. It will be interesting to see how Chelsea reacts after this defeat.
