England 2-1 Switzerland

_44409829_jenas270 The Italian Job was performed perfectly as England beat Switzerland in Fabio Capello’s first game in charge. Even though England looked nervous in the opening periods, they got better as the game progressed and that is sure to please Capello. The team news was a bit of a surprise for everyone as England opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Rooney the lone striker and David Bentley and Joe Cole supporting him from the wings. Gareth Barry was given the role of a defensive midfielder with Gerrard and Jenas mastering the midfield. In the defense, Wes Brown and Ashley Cole were the full backs with Ferdinand and Upson in central defense. England seemed uncomfortable at first, probably they were low of confidence, and they were booed by the fans. But no sooner had the boos started, the impressive Joe Cole burst down the left and crossed for Jenas to score the opener. England grew confident after that and the Joe Cole and Rooney were combining well to create chances.

_44409757_capello203 Switzerland were soon level after the break with substitute Derdiyok firing a shot past James. But England soon replied and the impressive Gerrard surged from the right to cross for Wright Phillips to convert from 6 yards. England dominated the last stages of the match but failed to find the net more times. But the fans were satisfies, manger is satisfied and more what more can we ask for. But Capello would have seen that he needs to do a lot of work if he wants to make England a dominant force in football. The best thing about the match was the performance of David Bentley. His passing was accurate and he created several chances for England. He has got a lot of ability and now he has proved that he can step up to the international level. Joe Cole and Rooney were also impressive and had a cracking game. Peter Crouched showed what he can offer when he came on in the second half. Even though England passing was poor in the first half, they gradually improved and that’s a plus point.

But I don’t think that its time to get carried away. The opposition was Switzerland who are a decent side and not world-beaters. They did mange to create chances against England and caused them a few problems. But i think Capello will slowly get the best out of each player. He gave a chance to several new players and that is what is pleasing to see. If he can get the best out of the young players, then we have a lot to look forward to the future. This was Capello’s  first international match as a manager and he might also improve slowly. He will try the formations and find the perfect system. It will be interesting to see his formation in the friendly against France. Now that will be a real test. But overall, a decent performance by England and a good day for Capello.
